Alright so bascially i believe i am posting in the right place but here i go..
As we talked in the last class me and prof found the interest of lacrosse leaving the process of understanding to not understanding the game. You comprehend the game more when u are closer to the field or on the field then in the stands or on the side line. Which then lead to the whole grand topic of illusions. How things in life protrays the topic of illusions. I think i have broken down illusions into about 3 different sub topics or terms. The distance, the mind, and shocking.
Distance: while researching distance i came up with the idea of the whole pixel paniting a picture. I found a picture of an eye ball. from far away it seems to be a picture of an eye ball but as u zoom in its about just broken up to many differnet types of eyes. Another thing i believe i liked would be the whole topic of scale that we researched in the book. i believe kristine did the idea with the pillars and mirrors, creating them bigger so they look normal from far away from as u approach they are grand. I did a little research on a couple of diffferent illusionist/ magicians. Harry houdini did an act with him placed inside of a large milk can the illusion was you cannot get out. it seems impossible to our eye that he will never get out but to his eye he knows there is a specific way to get out.
Mind: I found a picture of an illusion that distorts the way you look at something it changes. the floor was made in such a way that it looks to have a million of cubes everywhere. It seems that the way the color and textures are played with are the simple creation of this illusuion. Criss angel has used mind in a way with three of his acts. Floating, Walking on water and spliting water. i like the way that created the illusion through the idea of these things actually happened.
* important* i found out while researching Mr. Angel that indea most of this stuff is fake, none of it is actually real. I watched a couple of videos after watching his acts that its all about mis directions. The way the camera or in our museum sense you are being placed in that certain situation. Theres no big secert just different ways to look at it.
Shocking: now i really like David Blaine in the sense that everything that he did seems to take on an aggressive look and that he needed to get out to live. But also that alot of his stuff is shocking to the eye. Couple of acts that i watched would be him being traped in a sphere and have to breathe under water for a certain amount of time. While researching this guy i kinda came up with the idea of expect the unexpected in my sketchbook. I believe to have an interest in this you kinda have to have that in mind while viewing his work. Another shocking one is that he actually froze him self in ice and survive through another certain amount of time. I believe this illusuion is achieveable by placing with textures. Another thing i liked was how he displaced things that would be normally somewhere else. like in the act the womens watched ending up in the glass window that the store was locked. This kinda brang the idea of while in my museum to have something displaced somewhere else where he never should be. example like car inside room.

This is great. It seems like you are talking about two things that interrelated, and may even be part of the same thing - no I think they are different.
ReplyDeleteSo you begin talking about the different ways we might come to understand something as it relates to distance. This might also be discussed in terms of PERSPECTIVE, where is you viewpoint from. your understanding of a car looking at it from below is different from your understanding of it from above. Your understanding of the car is different when it is assembled and functions verses when all the pieces are laid out in a line, organized by size (or weight or color).
Our understanding of the city is based on the speed (scale of movement) in which we experience it - our PERSPECTIVE - our understanding is different whether we are walking, biking, driving, flying.
the phrase "forest for the trees" relates understanding. But I think what is important is that this is framed in terms of UNDERSTANDING - which to me, sort of speaks to an idea of TRUTH.
but you talk about ILLUSION, which is deception. In the context of TRUTH (and I guess its opposite - FALSE) Illusion is dealing with more than things that are simply false - the is an active aspect to it, the false fact wishes to be believed - it presents itself as fact and tries to get you to beleive it.
This also relates to two other things. the first being an earlier post on conspiracy theories - where I talk about our ability to believe them relates to their scale.
with an illusion, its about getting the viewer to stretch in terms of what they believe. that's the challenge for an illusionist - how fantastical can a thing be and be beleived. of course thats the point of an illusionist anyway, though right. aren't we SUPPOSED to know that its fake? the only other alternative is SUPERNATURAL (scale again, eh?)
But what I think is interesting with Blaine specifically is that he performes his illusions in the street (not on stage). in a way its like slacker - presenting lofty ideas, in simple packages.
I also liked your phrase "expect the unexpected."
so what's your proposal for next step? my suggestion is that you research some of these ILLUSIONS and think if you can come up with the architectural equivalent.
