dreams

So I've been doing research on a couple aspects relating to my subject matter, dreams. During my research I discovered more about the separation and differences between the two hemispheres of the brain. The left brain is the logical, sequential, and rational side of the brain. It is analytical, objective, and looks at the parts of a thing first, before assembling it into a whole. The right brain (side responsible for dreams) is thought of primarily as being the random, intuitive side of the brain that tends to look at the whole first. It is holistic, subjective, and synthesising. More simply the left side of the brain is considered the "logical" side and the right side is considered the "creative" side. These two sides of the brain are connected by the corpus callosum. This bundle of nerves wires the left side of the body to the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Researchers have discovered that dreams (strange and illogical experiences) occur during a period of our sleep called REM sleep. REM sleep begins with signals from an area at the base of the brain called the pons. These signals travel to a brain region called the thalamus, which relays them to the cerebral cortex. The pons also sends signals that shut off neurons in the spinal cord, causing temporary paralysis of the limb muscles. I'm thinking about possibly relating these brain signals that occur during REM sleep to determine the buildings circulation paths.

I also wanted to experiment with using dreams to help aid my design process. I came across something called "dream machines", which are lucid dream masks which aid you in controlling your dreams by the use of LED lights, which are triggered when rapid eye moment (REM) occurs. Once REM moment occurs the dream machines set off lights within the mask and also sounds which are aimed at drawing attention to the fact that you are dreaming. With training one is able to develop the ability to wake up during dreams and control them. I definitely believe that the mask could in fact work because lucid dreams occur when you are disrupted while sleeping. Maybe I could design my museum in a lucid dream??? It seems a little far out there, but isn't that what this project is about????

  1. wow thats a pretty cool idea, theres a bunch of ways you could go with the design...

  2. so if you are talking about buying a dream mask and designing you building while you are asleep that would be AWESOME. of course that would be if the dream mask worked - but hey who knows. don't judge the product by the low quality of the commercial.

regardless, you seem like your on the right track.
